According to Kailan International Steel Information on January 9, the Bulgarian Balkan Hydrogen Energy Industry Cluster signed a memorandum of cooperation in the field of green hydrogen with South Korea's GIG SA.
South Korea has proposed to Bulgaria that the two countries sign a bilateral trade and investment promotion agreement, the Ministry of Commerce said. South Korea's trade minister called for greater bilateral cooperation in supply chains in major industrial sectors and other important areas such as nuclear energy and hydrogen production.
In terms of the hydrogen energy industry, in 2023, Bulgaria announced plans to invest 2 billion BGVs (about 1.119 billion US dollars) in the production, distribution and use of green hydrogen. Bulgaria's national hydrogen strategy will be launched in 2030, and the country expects to use around 47 GWh of renewable energy to produce green hydrogen. At present, the country has not announced a production target for green hydrogen and its derivatives.
It is understood that Bulgaria has previously received funding from the European Commission for the construction of its first hydrogen valley, which is one of the eight hydrogen valleys that the EU is planning to build. The European Commission will provide 32 million BGVs (US$17.8 million) for related projects in Stara Zagora, Bulgaria. The project will be part of the construction of the Hydrogen Valley in the Stara Zagora region.
